How to Change or Reset Mac Login Password

There are a number of reasons why you might want to change the password on your Mac. Whatever the reason. If you know your Mac computer’s current password, you can log in and set a new one in System Preferences. Just follow the steps shown below to Change the password.

How to Change your Mac login password:-

1. Log into your Mac.

2. Open the Apple menu (the Apple logo at the top-left of your screen) and choose “System Preferences.” You may also have it pinned to your menu bar (it’s a gray gear).

3. Click “Users & Groups.”

4. Select your user account on the left of the box and click the padlock in the bottom left to make your changes.

5. Click “Change Password.”

6. Enter your current password, your new password (twice) and a hint to help you remember your password (don’t make it too obvious). Click “Change Password” to complete the process.

How to Reset Mac Login Password

If you can’t login because you don’t remember your password. First, check that the Caps Lock isn’t on, because passwords are case sensitive. Then, try using your password hint by clicking on the question mark in the password field. But if you still can’t log in, don’t worry. There are few ways we can reset the Mac login password. 

You can Reset a password through:-

• Entering Recovery Mode.
• Using your Apple ID.
• Using another admin account. (if you have one) saved on your computer.

Entering Recovery Mode:-

1. Restart your Mac. You can only access the recovery mode while the laptop is booting up, which is why you need to restart it. 

2. While it is restarting, press & hold the Command + R keys until you see the Apple logo. If you see the login screen, you will have to restart and repeat this step again until you get to Recovery Mode.

3. Go to the Apple Menu at the top & click Utilities. This will open a drop-down menu.

4. Then click Terminal.

5. Type “resetpassword” in the terminal window. Don’t use any space in between the words.

6. Then hit Enter. This will open the Reset Password Assistant screen. 

7. Type your New Password and a Hint.

8. Finally, click Restart. Once you get to the Login screen, select the user you just reset the password for and type your new password. Click Enter.

Using your Apple ID:-

If you try to log in 3 times incorrectly, you will see a pop-up message asking if you want to reset your password with your Apple ID. Follow these steps to continue:

1. Click the Arrow to use your Apple ID.

2. Enter your Apple ID and password.

3. Then hit Enter. Right after this, you will be asked to restart your computer.

4. Click Restart to continue. 
5. Log in with your New password.

Note: If you can get to your desktop, then you have successfully reset or changed your password.

Using Another Admin Account:-

If your Mac has more than one user, and you know the login credentials to another one of the admin accounts, you can use that admin account to login and reset your password. Here’s how:

1. Log in to another Admin Account.

2. Go to System Preferences. You can find this in your Applications folder.

3. Next, click Users & Group.

4. Click on the Padlock in the bottom-left corner of the window. You will have to enter the username and password of that user again.

5. Select the User you want to reset the password for, then click Reset Password.

6. Fill in the necessary fields and hit Enter. 

7. Then log out of the current user account. This will bring you to the Login screen.

8. Log in to the account you just changed the password for.
